Hackney Genealogy :: Thomas Hackney Descendants

Born: About 1796 in Virginia
Died: About 1878 in Mouthcard, Pike County, Kentucky
Son of John Hackney and Jane Vail of Russell County, VA.
Married: Priscilla "Siller" Drake
Compiled by: Susan M. Jurban

Generation No. 1

THOMAS2 HACKNEY (JOHN1) was born Abt. 1796 in VA, and died Abt. 1878 in Mouthcard, Pike County, KY. He married PRISCILLA "SILLER" DRAKE April 16, 1817 in Floyd County, KY, daughter of MICHAEL DRAKE and JANE. PRISCILLA was born Abt. 1798 in Montgomery County, VA, and died after 1860 in Pike County, KY. THOMAS was the son of JOHN HACKNEY and JANE VAIL of Russell County, VA.

Thomas was in Russell County, VA in the 1820 Census. He was the first Hackney to settle in Pike County, KY and was listed in the first tax list of 1823, with 1 white male over 21 and 3 horses. Thomas and Priscilla settled in Mouthcard on Hackney Creek. In the 1835 Pike County tax list, he was taxed for 200 acres on the Sandy River. At one time, he reportedly owned all the land from the KY/VA State line on both sides of the Levisa River to and including Little Card Creek.

Per "The Kentucky Land Grants", by Willard Rouse Jillson, Thomas was granted a total of 1,769 acres on Louisa Fork and Hackney Branch of the Sandy River. He also received land grants in Tazewell (now Buchanan) County, VA on the Louisa Fork. From Census records, in 1850, Thomas' real estate was valued at $4,000, in 1860 $3,000, but in 1870, he no longer owned any real estate.

The following is from "The Big Sandy Valley", by William Ely in 1887:

"Old Tom Hackney was a noted character of Sandy almost from time immemorial. Along the banks of the Levisa Fork, as it plows through the mountain pass from Wise County, Virginia to Pike County, Kentucky. Here for a long time lived Tom Hackney. To say that he partook of the wild and slipshod appearance of the view spread out before you, would hardly be true; but rather, Mr. Hackney was part of the wild scene himself. He did not drink in the rugged views surrounding him, that being impossible; but rather, he was a part of the wildest crags of the partially torn-down glomerate, an unseemly, misshapen limb of one of the scraggy pines that had hard work to reach down ward and find soil and moisture sufficient to retain the size and strength it had already attained before it was diverted to other little sproulet pines striving to assume tree manhood. He was as uncomely in person and dress as the half-starved, stunted timber of the place. In speech he was not only uncoth, but vulgar. But he was a fair liver, and many noted men have, in times gone by, partaken of his hospitality. General John C. Breckinridge has been his guest. Mr. Hackney must have had a good wife, for his descendants are by no means wild, like their ancestor..."

In 1870, Thomas was living with his daughter, Syndesty, who was listed as owning the property they were residing on. According to Pike County, KY land records, Thomas deeded his property to his children prior to his death. It is not known where Tom and Priscilla were buried; however it is possible that they were buried in the Short/Sloane Cemetery off Hackney Creek in Mouthcard, Pike County, KY. Their son, Ephraim was buried there, as were other Hackney descendants.
